Is CeMAP hard? An honest answer for 2026

Short answer: CeMAP is moderately hard — closer to a driving theory test than a university degree. The pass mark is around 70%, most people need 35–60 focused hours per unit, and the usual cause of failure isn’t intelligence — it’s exam technique, not raw knowledge.

If you’re reasonably numerate and consistent for a few weeks, it’s very achievable. If you go in having only skimmed the textbook, it isn’t. Here’s exactly what makes it hard, and what closes the gap.

What actually makes it hard

It’s rarely the content itself — it’s three specific traps:

1Scenario questions, not fact recall. Most questions describe a client situation and ask what applies — you need to apply the rule, not just know it.

2Deliberate near-misses. Wrong options are usually a real rule applied in the wrong context — the £85,000 FSCS limit shown where a temporary high balance actually applies, for instance.

3New vocabulary, fast. APRC, MCOB, FSCS, LTV — none of it is difficult once explained, but it’s a lot to absorb from a standing start.

Making it easier
